Abstract

This is a review research paper having meta-analytical research on competency-based appraisal (CBA) frameworks influencing sustainable career development among the Indian manufacturing and information technology (IT) sectors. Based on empirical evidence from a selective literature review of peer-reviewed publications (2005-2024) this study systematically assesses the conceptual framework for, implementation aspects of, and outcome effectiveness of competency-based performance appraisal systems. We find that organizations that adopt structured CBA frameworks tend to report significantly higher employee career progression rates, retention metrics, and alignment of individual competencies with the strategic objective of the organization in a more effective manner. This leads to sector-specific traditions, with the IT scenario having far more detailed behavioral competency mapping than that of the manufacturing sector, which is still closely tied to generic technical and functional competency clusters. Additionally, the mediating variables of training on the use of appraisal and feedback quality and managerial effectiveness in leveraging digital tools for performance evaluation were explored as potential influences. Based on both established theoretical frameworks, such as the Iceberg Competency Model and McClelland's competency to operate models, the study synthesizes key findings and delineates research gaps that can be addressed in future scholarly endeavors.
