Abstract

As the world has become more and more energy- and fossil fuel-hungry, and more and more environmentally aware, it's become even more critical to find sustainable, clean energy sources. This article uses a case study of five key energy technologies: solar, wind, fuel cells, tidal and biomass energy. The potential of solar energy for production of electricity by PV and for thermal energy for domestic and industrial use is examined. The electricity generation potential, selection of wind sites, and onshore and offshore applications of wind energy, are discussed. Fuel cells are studied as a highly efficient electrochemical energy conversion device, and potential applications include transportation, stationary power generation and distributed energy. The potential for generating energy from the predictable tides in the oceans is explored for tidal power; as well as its geographical scope, infrastructure needs and environmental effects. Biomass energy is considered as a sustainable energy technology to utilising agricultural residues, organic wastes, and other biodegradable materials for electricity, heat, biogas and biofuels production. The study examines these technologies with regards to their energy conversion efficiency, resource availability, environmental impact, economic viability, technological maturity, and applications. It also stresses some key issues, such as intermittency, the need for large upfront capital investments, the need for energy storage, infrastructure development, and sustainable resource management. The study highlights the importance of their successful integration to decrease reliance on traditional fossil fuels, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy security. Plus, the technological development, government policy support, and proper energy management practices are important for optimising their potential. In conclusion, the study suggests that a diversified mix of renewable energy sources can play a substantial role in achieving sustainable development and moving towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly global energy landscape.
