India's brick making sector is one of the largest informal manufacturing industries and plays a crucial role in providing employment in rural areas and supply of materials for construction. Despite its importance, operators of brick kilns still face recurring issues in operations, management and regulations that hinder their productivity, profitability and sustainability. This paper discusses the major challenges faced by the brick kiln owners such as shortage of labor, technology constraints, challenges in complying with environmental regulations, supply chain disruptions, lack of managerial expertise and changing government policies. The study highlights the need of modernization, training programs and policy changes for increasing operational capacity and sustainable development of the industry.
