TRADITIONAL THEATRE FORMS OF ODISHA AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURAL IDENTITY AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING: A STAKEHOLDER PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Traditional theatre forms represent the collective memory, cultural values, and social experiences of communities. In Odisha, traditional theatre has historically served as an important medium of cultural expression, social communication, and community participation. Forms such as Jatra, DandaNata, PrahladaNataka, SahiJatra, and other folk performance traditions have contributed significantly to preserving regional identity while addressing social, moral, and cultural concerns. This study explores the contribution of traditional theatre forms of Odisha to cultural identity and social well-being from the perspective of stakeholders, including performers, audiences, cultural practitioners, community members, and organizations involved in the preservation of performing arts. The study adopts a qualitative case study approach using stakeholder interviews, observations, and secondary sources to examine how traditional theatre influences cultural continuity, social relationships, community participation, and collective well-being. The findings suggest that traditional theatre functions as a cultural institution that strengthens social bonds, preserves indigenous knowledge systems, encourages intergenerational learning, and provides spaces for social dialogue. However, challenges such as commercialization, declining audience interest, financial constraints, and competition from digital media threaten the sustainability of these traditions. The study emphasizes the need for institutional support, documentation, and community participation to preserve Odisha’s traditional theatre heritage and enhance its contribution to cultural and social well-being.
