THE SAGA OF AJIT DAS IN MODERN ODIA DRAMA: REASSESSING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO CONTEMPORARY ODIA THEATRE

Abstract

The history of modern Odia theatre is shaped by artists who transformed performance from a traditional cultural activity into a serious artistic and intellectual practice. Among these influential figures, Ajit Das (1949–2020) occupies a distinctive position as a theatre practitioner whose career represents a remarkable journey of artistic commitment, experimentation, and cultural engagement. Although widely celebrated for his contributions to Odia cinema, his role in shaping contemporary Odia theatre remains equally significant. As an actor, director, playwright, and theatre mentor, Das contributed to the modernization of stage performance through innovative approaches to acting, direction, dramaturgy, and theatre education. This paper reassesses AjitDas's contribution by locating his work within the larger trajectory of modern Odia drama and examining how his artistic practices negotiated the relationship between tradition and modernity. The study argues that Das's theatre was not merely a continuation of existing theatrical conventions but a creative intervention that strengthened the intellectual, aesthetic, and institutional foundations of contemporary Odia theatre. His legacy demonstrates the continuing relevance of regional theatre as a space for cultural dialogue, artistic exploration, and social reflection.
