Abstract

High-performance concrete (HPC) is widely used in modern construction due to its superior mechanical strength, improved durability, and enhanced resistance to aggressive environmental conditions. However, achieving further improvements in concrete performance requires the development of innovative materials and sustainable modification techniques. In this context, the incorporation of hybrid nanoparticles, such as nano-silica (NS), nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO₂), nano-alumina (nano-Al₂O₃), and other nanomaterials, has attracted considerable attention in concrete technology. Hybrid nanoparticles can improve the microstructure of cementitious materials through filler effects, nucleation of hydration products, and pozzolanic reactions, resulting in a denser cement matrix and a potentially stronger interfacial transition zone (ITZ). This review paper examines the influence of hybrid nanoparticles on the strength and durability characteristics of high-performance concrete. Particular emphasis is placed on compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption, porosity, chloride penetration, sulphate resistance, and resistance to chemical and environmental deterioration. The review also discusses the importance of nanoparticle dosage, particle dispersion, water-to-binder ratio, and compatibility with chemical admixtures in determining concrete performance. Although hybrid nanoparticles offer promising opportunities for improving HPC properties, excessive dosages and poor dispersion may cause agglomeration, reduce workability, and negatively affect mechanical performance. The review identifies key research gaps related to the combined effects of different nanoparticles, long-term durability, environmental sustainability, and the development of optimum hybrid nanoparticle proportions. The findings provide a foundation for further experimental investigations into the development of durable, high-strength, and sustainable concrete for advanced construction applications.
