A Study of Planning Problems in Small Residential Buildings and Their Practical Solutions

Abstract

Small residential buildings face major planning challenges due to limited floor area, rising construction costs, and land scarcity. Improper planning can lead to poor space utilization, inadequate lighting and ventilation, lack of privacy, and insufficient storage. This paper reviews existing literature on these parameters and consolidates the findings into ten common planning problems with practical solutions, highlighting how factors like window placement, ventilation, and privacy interact with one another. A consolidated planning framework is proposed as a practical reference for designing functional, comfortable small residential buildings.
